Granite handles UV exposure, heat, and moisture without fading, warping, or breaking down the way engineered materials can. Quartz isn’t recommended outdoors — sun exposure over time can cause it to fade or warp (see our quartz countertops page for more on that). Marble’s softness and etching issues make it a poor outdoor choice too. For an outdoor kitchen, granite is really the only one of the three that’s built for the job.
Designing Around a Grill
Grill cutouts need to account for heat radiating off the unit, not just the cutout dimensions — we plan clearance during the measure, not as an afterthought. Bar seating overhangs need the same overhang support considerations as an indoor island: past 10-12 inches, you’re into bracket territory. We typically recommend 3cm thickness for outdoor spans given the added structural demands of an uncovered or partially covered space.
Sealing Matters More Outside
Direct exposure to Georgia’s rain, pollen, and humidity means outdoor granite benefits from more frequent sealing than an indoor kitchen — closer to once a year rather than every 1-2 years indoors.
It’s rare in Middle Georgia’s climate, but repeated freeze-thaw cycling on stone with existing hairline cracks or poor seam support can be a factor over many years — proper installation minimizes this risk significantly.
